Isolated system or not?

As long as the total energy does not change - given a fixed m - and there is no intermediary interaction with anything 'outside', there is nothing to restrict phase changes or chemical interactions to qualify as a closed system. In fact, if you broaden the definition just a little, then even nuclear interactions qualify: as long as the m-energy remains the same and there is no intermediary interaction with anything 'outside'.
