Putting braces without xray?

I visited my ortho today because i have an overbite and we talked about braces. he said he will use self ligating braces on both upper and lower teeth, whatever that means, and he made an appointment in 2 weeks and he said "come in two weeks and we will put the braces on". does this mean he wont take any xray or that he wont take a mold of my teeth? he teaches orthodontics at a university and he is presumably an expert in his field, but should i just let him do as he pleases or what? any advice?
